History and Functionality

This instrument consists on its front of a conventional slide rule and on its back of a straight adder that can handle 6-digit numbers.

The adder is used to perform additions and subtractions. A stylus is provided for this purpose. It is inserted into the body of the rule.

The German carpenter Kaspar FABER settled in 1758 in Nuremberg (Germany) to engage in the production of pencils of lignite from 1761. The business expanded in Germany and abroad and became FABER CASTELL in 1898. For 250 years this company remained in the same family (8 generations).

From 1880 to 1975 FABER CASTELL became the world largest manufacturer of slide rules.
